38 Hedges Boulevard Addition

Project Description

The customer required a traditional one-storey house to be turned into a small castle, with the total surface area of 2,500 square feet. They were looking to sell it quickly, which they did, without hiring a realtor.
Such transformation was made possible through expanding the existing building. The authentic castle look was achieved by including a variety of architectural elements: pointed roofs, rounded towers, an arched doorway, and a renewed window shape, not to mention the intricate stonework. On the inside, uniquely combined brick and stone also contributed to this ancient appearance. The tower’s dome laid out with bricks and tall narrow windows, the winding staircase, the elegant railing, among other details, completed the transformation.
Our scope included the following:
  • Preliminary design and space planning
  • Working drawings and coordination with clients and consultants
  • Building permit procurement
  • Tendering of construction contract
  • Architectural control during construction and contract administration*
*Architectural control during construction:
Once the building permit is issued, we help with the hiring of a general contractor and ensure that the architectural plans are being followed. Since the city inspector checks the construction site on a regular basis, it is essential that the work carried out strictly corresponds to permit drawings. Normally, about 50% of building projects do not pass such inspections. This results in remediation measures, which means an extra cost to the customer and delays in construction.

Our Client's Words:

A European-style castle in Toronto, in the XXI century? Yes, VArchitect made our dream come true! They took a plain-looking one-storey house and turned it into an amazing piece of architecture, complete with two floors and even towers.

To make this happen, we had to find a firm specialized in large custom homes. VArchitect, which has such a division, was the answer since they work with leading design and technologies. We were able to fully benefit from their custom-designed supplier network in order to bring our vision to life.

Every little detail comes together for an authentic castle look: pointed roofs, rounded towers, an arched doorway, and a renewed window shape. The perfectly designed stonework gives the entire edifice that realistic touch of antiquity.

Time travel does not stop at the doorstep: the unique combination of bricks and stone provides the same magic touch indoors - you feel like you are living in the XVI century. The tower is crowned with a perfectly shaped brick dome and has those typical tall narrow windows. The winding staircase is flanked by an elegant handrail. Medieval light fixtures, coupled with elements of interior design, do wonders to complete this marvelous transformation.

What seemed impossible to achieve, posed no problem to VArchitect: a box became a castle. Thank you for “reading our minds” and making our vision a reality!
